U. S. Embassy Office Building
Dakar Senegal, West Africa

Robert P. Madison International (RPMI) was Commissioned by the Foreign Building Operations of the US State Department to design the United States Embassy Office Building • The staff apartments and the residence for the Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) in 1965, immediately after the Republic of Senegal received its independence from the Republic of France.  There was great enthusiasm for the commission, for obvious reasons, however, understanding and observing the Architecture of Dakar presented a challenge for the designers.  Dakar had been the Capital of French West Equatorial Africa and thus the City of Dakar contained some of the finest examples of Avant Garde modern architecture to be found anywhere in the world and the Senegalese very proud of their

 “belle ville”

RPMI designed the Embassy to reflect the finest in modern architecture and to be a compatible addition to the urban environment, directly across the street from the Cathedral and around the corner from the “Assemble Nationale”.

The building contained the usual offices for the Diplomatic Corps as well as the USIS Library and the travel section for necessary documents and Immigration.

One additional fascinating matter was that all RPMI documents were prepared in the French Language and using the Metric System of Measurement.

12 years after this original commission, the building was dedicated on July 4, 1977
